Diners, Drive Ins, and Dives Phoenix- Roberto’s and Matt’s Big Breakfast

On a roadtrip or visiting a new city I like to find good places to eat. My references usually include blogs, word of mouth, Yelp, and the Food Network. For this trip I consulted Yelp and Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives regularly. Two of our DDD finds were Roberto’s in Anthem, Arizona and Matt’s Big Breakfast in Downtown Phoenix.

At Roberto’s order the massive burritos! I ordered the burrito al pastor- pork and spicy red sauce.  It was amazing- and messy! My white shorts did not survive.

My sister ordered the carnitas burrito and loved it. We both ate about half- next time we will be sharing. Roberto’s is also a good family restaurant with outdoor seating (good for when it isn’t 112 degrees like today). The kids both had cheese quesadillas that came with beans and rice.  They were happy campers.

The only thing we didn’t like was the salsa that came with the chips and salsa.  Going for the guac next time. And there will be a next time!

Doesn’t it even look hot!

Next up on our Diners, Drive Ins, and Dives tour was Matt’s Big Breakfast.  We came here for lunch in downtown Phoenix right before dropping me off at the airport for my return flight to Baltimore Sad smile

I ordered the above the 5 spot sandwich with thick cut black pepper bacon. It was a good breakfast sandwich but the bacon was the star. Matt’s is a farm to table-ish restaurant.  They have a lot of local and homemade goods. I had some blueberry lemonade which was my favorite thing I had here.  Of course no photo because I was dying of thirst!

The kids split a burger which was really good.

My sister had the waffle (which was good but still just a waffle, nothing amazing) plus some bacon.  Again, the bacon was fab! ***edited to add: My sister reminded me that the maple syrup was the star of the how and must have been straight from the tree. It made up for her regular old waffle.

I’d return to Matt’s as well but there is usually a big wait (it is very popular) so I’d hold off until after 1pm when things are slower. And I would order bacon with a side of bacon- and a blueberry lemonade!

What is your favorite Diners, Drive Ins, and Dives locale? There are a lot of goodies but Chaps Pit Beef in Baltimore and Garbo’s Grill Food Truck in Key West are at the top of my list.

Ok so you forgot to add that while my waffle was just a waffle….the syrup was the best syrup ever in the world!! Straight from the tree to my regular waffle:)

  2. I have never thought about using DDD as a food guide but it is a great idea. Yelp has let me down during many trips and I do not think I am going to relay on the site anymore.

I’ve never used Diners, Drive-ins and Dives as a guide but that’s a great idea! And while I’m sorry your shorts didn’t make it, at least it was for a worthy cause 🙂

I love bacon with a side of bacon! 🙂 I’ve only been to one Triple D restaurant – Captain Chuckamuck’s in Rescue, VA. It’s pretty good! Never had a bad meal there. But, the rumor I hear locally is that they’re selling. Bummer. 🙁
