Extra day in Flores, Guatemala

Lake Peten

Tikal was amazing and staying inside the Tikal National Park was fun but it meant getting up at 5am to catch a flight to Antigua, Guatemala.  We arrived at 630 to to airport (for our 7am flight- love tiny airports!) to find out that our flight was cancelled.  Boo!

Avianca Airlines offered to put us in a hotel for the day in nearby Santa Elena.  Our tour leader was on the ball and asked if we could instead be put in a hotel in Flores, Guatemala an island town surrounded by Lake Peten which is  next to Santa Elena. Flores is a known local vacation destination.  The airline agreed!

Some tours from Intrepid (the company I am using for this tour) are extended a day or two add Flores to the itinerary. I was a little bummed we weren’t going there already because most other travelers we met were there and liked it.

There are caves to tube in close by and most people take a boat ride around the lake.  This girl shops and sunbathes.

The airline got us free meals too and I ordered the fruit from the hotel restaurant before going out to sunbathe.  I was so excited to see papaya.  Good papaya- not the underripe fruit masquerading as papaya in the continental 48.

I did some wandering around after tanning myself brown with a hint of red.  The edges of the island were flooded from all the rain but all the restaurants and shops were open for business.  And the sun was shining bright!

Back at the hotel after showers and packing (again), the wait staff must have heard about our love of papaya and make us papaya smoothies before we left for the airport.  I was a big fan.

Overall I’m sad we missed out on an extra day in Antigua but if you have to get stuck somewhere Flores, Guatemala was an excellent place to chill for a day!
