Key West in a Day
Andrea is on vacation again. I know, this is shocking This trip I’m heading to Cuba for a week in Havana, Santiago de Cuba, and Cienfuegos. But before landing in Cuba, Mom and I spent a day in Key West.
Key West is the southernmost point in the United States and is a fantastic, fun vacation destination. I’ve been here a few times before so I was leading my mom around pointing out my favorites and telling her fun stories of the last time I was here for a wedding.
Lunch was at one of my favorites- DJ’s Clam Shack on Duval Street. It was featured on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives many years ago and can get a little crowded at mealtimes. The two guys working the front were both from Baltimore and wearing Orioles gear (it was opening day) so we had a good chat about Baltimore while ordering. I had a lobster roll and mom ordered clam strips.
Everything was amazing as I knew it would be! I also had a Islamorada pale ale along with my lobster roll. It was a new beer for me.
An old movie theatre turned Walgreens was our favorite building on Duval Street. My mom’s family used to own the movie theatre building in her hometown so we have a tendency to check out old theatres.
Hemingway’s House had a huge line from the ticket booth stretching halfway down the street. Instead we opted to go to the Key West Lighthouse which is almost directly across the street from Hemingway’s House. I was sad we didn’t get to see the 6 toed cats but the lighthouse was pretty cool and was also something I hadn’t done on previous trips. For $10 you can climb to the top for some crystal clear turquoise water views.
We bought some souvenir Key West magnets in the gift shop and proceeded to do some birthday shopping- my mom’s birthday was the day before. I bought a delicious praline and Mom bought yet another t-shirt with flip-flops on it. She’s obsessed. It was a good day in Key West but can’t wait to get to Cuba! More to come soon!
