Noumea, New Caledonia Beaches and Cruising Into Port

Arriving in New Caledonia was a treat.  We weren’t set to dock until 1pm so we were wide awake while we cruised through the archipelago. (Usually we are fast asleep while we cruise into a port in the early morning hours.)

New Caledonia is a French-speaking country but loads of Aussies and New Zealanders flock here as well due to the proximity of the islands and all the natural beauty here to behold.

There were sandbars and tiny islands (some with huts or boats on them) all over the place. I think if I lived here I would kayak out to these and snorkel around.

I wish I would have more time here in order to do some diving and see some of the outlying islands.

We arrived in Noumea, New Caledonia in the port which seemed very shallow but was right in the center of the city.  It is always so much easier to be in the center of the city so you don’t have to worry about a 30 minute drive to get anywhere.

Two blocks from the pier was area known as Place des Cocotiers, aka Little Paris, with fountains, greenery, trees, cafes, and bars, making it seem a little more like a hot and humid Paris.

We immediately hopped in a cab to head to Plage de la Baie des Citrons, Lemon Bay, one of the more popular beaches.  A lot of New Caledonians were on their lunch breaks and eating sandwiches on the beach.

There are a few other beaches in Noumea, the one next to us (Anse Vata) was famous for their windsurfing.  Again, it would have been nice to have more time here and get to experience a bit more of the aquatic life on these New Caledonia beaches.

But the water was very, very warm and I spent a lot of time just lazing around Smile There was a platform out in the water for kids to jump and flip off of.  If I was a kid, this is where I would be.
