Pyramids of Giza and Sphinx, Second Time is the Charm
Sometimes once is not enough when in Egypt. The Pyramids of Giza and Sphinx. the last remaining of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, were worth seeing twice. On my first full day in Egypt we spent half a day walking around the Great Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx but it was very smoggy and dusty.
Obviously, the whole experience was still incredible but I had bigger plans to get even better views of the Giza Necropolis.
On my tour’s very last day, I was set to fly out of Cairo at 1am (ugh!). Most of the group went to the bazaar to eat and shop while 4 of us made our way back to Giza. Generally I am a shopper but when faced with the choice of amazing sights or shopping, I choose amazing sights every single time!
Winding through the back neighborhood to the “locals” entrance was interesting. 90% of the trip we were harassed by males either trying to sell us goods or just being annoying. In this neighborhood there were women and children so there was no catcalling, selling, or annoyances at all. It was a real place for real Egyptians and I loved it! (We were actually a little bit lost on the winding roads too but it was an adventure!)
The other reason why a return visit was needed was because the first time there were raids in the nearby neighborhood, destroying (blowing up) illegal hotels and buildings. The explosions were quite scary so we did not dawdle by the Sphinx, which was close to the action. We actually had to talk our way to the Sphinx as security had closed the area off.
Today there was less dust, less smog, and no government raids!
We were all about the Sphinx and got views from every angle. It is such a strange looking statue and so very awesome.
The dust and smog was much better so the photos were more clear and we could actually see all 3 pyramids at once. That was the main goal!
I’m so glad I came back to Giza for Round 2. Sometimes if the weather, man-made pollution, or government raids don’t cooperate, it is good to have some extra time to revisit to get the full experience.
Reader Question: Where have you been that you needed to do a Round 2? Was it due to weather, illness, terrorism, bad planning?
