Walking the Walls of Dubrovnik

The highlight of any trip to Dubrovnik is walking the loop on top of the walls of the old city. It offers the best views of Dubrovnik’s long history, architecture, and culture. A major port on the Adriatic Sea since the 7th century, it has been sovereign and under rule of the Roman, Byzantine, and Venetian empires and always a major center for trade.

Walking the walls of Old Town Dubrovnik is not cheap- about $30 a person (200 HRK). It gets very crowded and very hot up along the walls as well. But that should not deter you from walking the walls, just bring a hat, a water bottle,  and your patience!

There are restaurants, a few trinket stands, places to stop and get a drink, or use the restroom along the walls. This is not a restroom but a pretty guard tower or jail cell with a view.

Early morning or late afternoon, before and after the cruise ships are in port, is the best time to walk the walls. If you can get there early, do it!

The walls and forts within the walls were originally constructed beginning in the 8th century and have been continually added to, repaired, and replaced as needed. Dubrovnik Old Town has been the setting for many raids and sieges throughout the centuries, the last as recent as 1991-92.

These days the walls and fortresses are used at movie/TV backdrops often including HBO’s Game of Thrones. In Dubrovnik, there are a lot of Game of Thrones tourist, GOT souvenir shops, and people yelling “Shame, shame, shame” through the streets (A GOT thing).

Now a UNESCO World Heritage site, Dubrovnik is in good shape. Tourist dollars and coming in strong- too strong some would say. I am in the camp where visiting in the slow season (winter) or shoulder seasons of spring and fall is highly advised. I was there at the end of May (still considered shoulder season) and the city was overwhelmed with tourists during the day with cruise ship traffic. At night, it was so much more enjoyable and you could actually move around.

Beautiful photos! I haven’t watched GOT so that aspect would be lost on me but it still looks like a great destination.
