Watkins Glen, NY- Beer, Wine and Waterfalls

Our first afternoon in Watkins Glen, NY on Seneca Lake, part of the Finger Lakes region was fun-filled one. BC and I started off at Montour Falls, NY.

Montour Falls Me

The most cool thing about Montour Falls is that it is in the middle of a neighborhood!

Literally houses on either side of the waterfalls. I would so love to live here.

In Montour Falls, right outside of Watkins Glen, on top of a big hill in a dairy barn is Heavily Brewing Company. Jason hung out with us during a brewing day to show us the ropes and explain beer brewing techniques.

BC enjoyed the taproom decorations Smile

The best part was obviously the tasting. Jason and BC discussed beer- looking angrily but was really just happily anticipating beer!

We had 8 different beers- 2 from Jason’s Heavily Brewing Company (HBC) and 6 others from the Finger Lakes area.

Most of our favorites came from this tray.  The Lager on the left my favorite (which turned out to be HBC’s), BC’s favorite was the dark one (Leaf from The Brewery of Broken Dreams) with the IPA from HBC coming in second place.

HBC does music nights, food trucks, and plain-old drinking in the over 100 year old converted barn.  Go check this place out. Jason knows what he is doing, these beers are great!

More waterfalls ensued. This one is called Hector Falls. You have to pull off the main road (Route 414) on your way to the vineyards to see this gem.

It poured buckets the night before we arrived so the waterfalls were in full force.

Chateau LaFayette Reneau was our next stop.  We turned the corner off of Route 414 and I said “Holy view!” The view from Chateau LaFayette Reneau is beautiful!

The house on the hill by the tasting room is where the former winemaker’s widow lives. I am so jealous of her lilacs.

We did a VIP wine tasting here in the wine cellar in the basement. I learned a whole lot about Finger Lakes grape growing, sugar content, and some history of wine making in the Finger Lakes.

I enjoyed the wines we tasted but the Roaring Red blend was my favorite of the bunch. (we did a lot of sipping not drinking since a lot of wine tasting was to come)

I purchased a bottle of this inexpensive gem and then we had to move on.

The second tasting of the day was at Atwater Estate Vineyards. My favorite wine here was the Big Blend red wine. Another bottle purchased, a little more about wine learned. All in all a great day!

After a long break where we checked into our Bed and Breakfast (more on that later!), dinner was on the agenda. Beers and food at Rooster Fish Brewing Company was our spot of choice. Our food was so-so, our beers cold, and the phone booth outside a lot of fun!

More from Watkins Glen and the Finger Lakes to come!

I would love to live in a neighborhood with a waterfall next door! But maybe the sound of it would make you have to pee all the time?
